Na Balam opened on January 6, 1988 on Playa Norte. A family was looking for something simple: a place on Isla Mujeres to get back to the land. When it was built, the trees stayed where they were. Almost four decades later, that decision still shapes the house.

Jungle first, hotel second

Paths curve around the roots. Rooms sit among palms, monsteras and shade. The pool ended up in the middle of the garden, not the garden around the pool. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the temperature: under the trees, midday weighs less.

One family, one street

Na Balam is at Calle Zazil-Ha 118, on the same stretch of Playa Norte where Casa del Jaguar and Lotus also stand today. The same family runs all three houses. From here you walk to the sand without crossing a street, and Oceanvs loungers are included with your stay.

What changed and what did not

The rooms were renewed: today there are four ways to sleep among the trees, from the Pool Side Room to the Master Suite. Yoga still happens under the palapa, at 9:00, 11:00 and 18:00. Zazil Ha spa works with clay and hands, in the shade of a tree. What did not change is the order of things: the place first, everything else after.

How to live it during your stay

  • Walk the garden early, before breakfast, which is included.
  • Take the 9:00 class under the palapa and head to Playa Norte afterwards.
  • Keep the afternoon for the hammock or the pool among the roots.
  • End the day with the sunset: the beach faces west.
